CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

The stop at Maki-Mae’s wasn’t exactly all doom and gloom. Without digging through the rubble pile of her uncle’s cave under the bridge with a backhoe—I guess trolls do live under bridges, was Maine’s irreverent thought—there was no way to tell for sure if her Uncle Joffrey was alive or dead. Either way, Maki-Mae agreed to contact the former owner of the New Brunswick sacred cattle that Noff’s pack had eaten to try to work out a settlement between the two parties. Bran and Suzy had been more than grateful.

When they finished, Sage offered to drive Bran and Suzy to wherever they wanted to go, but they declined, saying they would head to the Trollcave on their own, following Noff’s directions. Sage gave Maine a confused look here, and she told him she’d explain later. He also said he’d check in on her later.

Then Maine drove to the apartment with Noff.

“I appreciate what you did for my pack,” Noff said as they climbed the steps to the apartment.

Maine unlocked the front door and uttered the password to disable the protection spell. “Don’t thank me yet. Your pack still has a contract out on them, regardless of whether my uncle is still alive.”

Inside the kitchen she found Al setting out a plate of reheated food for her. The cyclops butler glanced at his watch. “Ah, Master Maine. Right on time. I have taken the liberty of preparing your dinner. Also a health potion in case you need it.”

“You are the best.” She sat and downed the health potion, feeling healing energy coursing through her with a sensation kind of like the first time you drink coffee. It slowly eased the aches and pains from the spelunking and rescue mission earlier.

Then she shoveled down forkfuls of a professionally prepared baked potato loaded with chicken, broccoli, and shredded cheese. It wasn’t on the same level as Sage’s cooking, but it was very good and much appreciated.

“For you, Master Noff…” He set a silver dish bowl filled with meat and gravy upon the table next to Maine. Noff blasted up on top of the table and began to lap it up messily. Meanwhile, Al stood back from the table with hands clasped behind his back in case they needed him.

Maine washed down the food with a glass of water set out for her, and when she finally pushed her empty plate away, Al dutifully scooped it up and dropped it off in the sink. Then he returned to the table and slid a stack of documents in front of Maine.

“The business plan research for your and Master Noff’s proposed business partnership.”

“That’s my cue to skedaddle,” Noff yipped. “To the Trollcave!” He took off, leaving Maine and Al and the very thorough-looking business plan research.

Maine gave the stack of papers a look that said she didn’t want anything to do with them. “Can I pay Maki-Mae to take a look at them and give me the rundown?”

“Why, certainly. I shall have a courier service deliver them.
